Pay Equity and the Gender Pay Gap

Marjorie Broward and I will be presenting a program on Pay Equity and the Gender Pay Gap at the monthly meeting Saturday, October 17 at the San Jose Country Club (see program listings). We will make extensive use of the AAUW publication The Simple Truth About the Gender Pay Gap, which is updated annually and, regretfully, has shown the pay gap hovering close to 22% since 2007. That means a typical (measured by median annual earnings) woman earned only 78% of what a typical man earned.

What is this pay gap? How is it calculated? Where do the worst pay gaps occur–in terms of jobs and in terms of women’s characteristics? How much of the pay gap is due to women’s choices? The answers may surprise you.

What can we do to close the pay gap? Legislative, personal, and business approaches will be discussed. We need to protect women…
